Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: May 10th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. Good “morning”, Motley Meese! The week begins …

    Morning low of 66 degrees in the Desert Southwest 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 95. Sunny skies are in the forecast.

    Have a great day, all y’alls!!

    • I was pleased to see that the Dallas Wings defeated the Indiana Racists – I hope the Dallas players got out of town safely and, I hope, mentally unscathed. And the Evil Empire was defeated so it was a good WNBA day. I watched the Portland Fire play the Chicago Sky and I do not like the cut of the jib of the Portland head coach, another mediocre NBA assistant coach who had risen as far as he could in the men’s game and decided that coaching women would be easy. It is insulting to the sport and to women.

  2. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers – including mothers of the heart whose connection to their children is from love and caring, the most important connection.

  3. Good morning. Enjoying the smell of my steeping tea and watching local news. Yesterday when I opened youtube to look for a song for the Blue Sky earworm thread, there was a new anti-Tr*mp song by the Waterboys and oh wow they really hate him. One good thing about the rotting pumpkin is he has inspired a lot of creativity.

  4. It’s 60 heading for 71 and sunny at the moment but the western sky is already cloudy so it won’t be sunny for long. Yesterday we generated 19.81 KWHs and the m-t-d at 154.36 is on track. Barely. And won’t be by end of day. sigh.

    Happy Mothers Day to mothers of the heart & blood who wish to be mothers. I very much miss mine. But I am a mother and my day will have very good things in it. My older son will be coming over this afternoon to prepare a steak dinner for me and I expect a phone call from my younger son. Meanwhile I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  5. Good Sunday morning, Moosekind! Happy Mothers’ Day to all! (I count dogs and cats as children.) I miss my mother too and think of her every day. Her two most memorable sayings were, “Never miss a chance to eat or go to the bathroom,” and “Blessed are they who expect nothing, for they shall not be disappointed.”

    It’s 64 F. in Ashburn, going up to 81 F., and a beautiful day. What rain? Anyway, I made coffee because I know if I don’t have at least one cup before I leave for my son’s house, I’ll have a blinding headache the rest of the day. He makes very strong coffee and uses 0% milk in it. I like half-n-half. Anyway, they’ve kindly invited me to brunch, Younger Son gave me a Mother’s Day card and a bunch of roses for the first time in the 51 years I’ve known him, and I talked to Daughter for 2 hours on the phone last night. She’s excited about her son’s upcoming wedding. I’m going too.

    At 4 p.m. I have to meet my friend who’s a writer and we’re going to stick some of her 31 books on writing in the bookshelves of the library in the Blue Ridge clubhouse. She wanted to give them to me, but I don’t have room. I need to downsize too, so my kids won’t have to do it after I’m gone. Would love to complain about how selfish and hateful Mango is to take away the only affordable golf course for lower-income DC residents, but have no time right now.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  6. Good morning, 53 and light clouds outside my windows today. I enjoyed lunch with our son at the bookstore cafe yesterday, and will cook huevos rancheros with our oldest son today. I miss being with my daughters but love knowing they are with their families today. This day is full of memories, and while I’m missing my mom and grandmother I look at the blooming rhodie that is now a small tree and remember the mom’s day so many years ago when my kids gave me the plant and smile. Feeling grateful. As always my best wishes to all.

    • Marking the years by the growth of gifts of plantings feels exactly right. I sent a yellow rose plant to my mother for one of her birthdays and when it grew too large for the pot, she replanted it outside. It survived for decades as a reminder of the gift and the day.

  7. Good morning. My neighborhood got the teensiest little bit of rain, not even enough to really water the plants I put out. Oh well. Did my walk. Got to plan how to lift weights at least once a week, my doctor wants me to.

  8. It’s 50 going up to 79 and sunny – supposed to be all day. We shall see. Yesterday we generated 8.38 KWHs and the m-t-d at 162.74 is no longer on track. sigh.

    It was a good Mothers Day. My younger son did call midmorning before he and his boys took his wife out and about to celebrate the day. My older son did come over in the late afternoon and prepare steak – actually he prepared 4 NY strips that were/are all big enough to feed 2 because that was the package at Sam’s Club that looked the best. So not only did I have a lovely steak dinner last night (and actually ate a whole one by myself, ahem) but we’ll have several meals this week based on lovely steak leftovers. We had a nice visit. He doesn’t eat red meat any longer, much meat at all, but he still knows how to cook superbly. (He ate a plate of the broccoli that he prepared to go with my steak.) He’s shutting down the grab-and-go pizza store at the university for the summer today and tomorrow. It’s already closed but he’s going to clean the ovens while they’re not in use and there’s a bunch of paperwork to be filed. He’s also got solo practice flights tomorrow and Wednesday. He takes the “checkride” – the final exam, both oral and practical – for his pilot’s license on the 20th.

    On the not-so-good side, even though she’s changed her address with USPS, AR DMV, and the insurance company, her car tags and insurance cards have not gotten to her. She just realized her tags expired on May 1. Ahem. Odds are good both went to her old address and her ex-husband threw them away. So she’s driving the Subaru over to DMV right now and will be there however long it takes to get her tags. Then to Farm Bureau to get a reprint of her insurance coverage.

    There’s much awful in the world – deliberate and accelerating – because those in control are evil, incredibly short-sighted, greedy people who get their jollies from seeing others hurt or die, prove to themselves how wealthy and superior they are by wasting and destroying resources, and totally refuse to see where their actions will take them as well as us inferiors they’re so looking forward to getting rid of. All we can do is help each other to the best of our abilities and keep on keepin’ on. And so I’m off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{HUGS}}}

    • The University of Arizona invited one of the destroyers of the world, a greedy techbro billionaire who also abused his girlfriend to be the commencement speaker. Why someone like that should be speaking as a role model for college students is beyond me but the UofA president is a man frightened of the damage the rotting pumpkin’s political party can do to the University and wants to suck up to them. Students are protesting the pick and I am sure backs will be turned and hands sat on during pauses for applause but it is beyond rude to make those kids day ugly instead of inspiring.

  9. Good afternoon, meeses! Monday …

    It is 104 degrees on my backyard thermometer and that is the expected high. I started my walk at 7am when it was 79 and by the time I got home it was already 91. It will be cooler tomorrow and into the rest of the week. Too early for triple digits! I am going to have to adjust my work schedule to carve out a walk time when it is not over 90. It may mean getting up a little earlier or just not working as long each morning.

    I did get a lot of little things done this morning and feel fairly certain that I am not missing any projects that came in last week. Tomorrow I get an eye checkup and new prescriptions. I am not sure why my vision is changing after cataract surgery but it definitely is not as clear as it was a couple of years ago.

    See all y’all tomorrow!

  10. Tuesday Meese. Cool and sunny here today

  11. Good morning. A weird one. I couldn’t understand why my alarm was going off, I was sure it was Saturday. Sigh. So, I’m getting ready for work. I am logging off early to go to the gym & lift weights, because I said at my annual physical that I would. Yay, more driving just as gas gets more expensive.

  12. It’s 51 heading for 81 and another sunny day. Yesterday we generated 20.43 KWHs and the m-t-d at 183.17 gained a bit.

    Wish I’d thought to get out the butter to soften last night. This morning – as in they should already be baked & on the cooling rack – seems to be the only morning cool enough to replenish the cookie “jar”. Oh well. Thursday morning will be almost as cool. Construction equipment/dust means I’ll be doing laundry this afternoon and taking it to the laundromat to dry this evening. Meanwhile I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  13. Good Tuesday morning, Meese! Yesterday I woke up feeling unusually stupid, and moved as one in a fog the whole day. Attributed this to taking the cough suppressant medicine on top of all my other night-time meds. Last night I didn’t take it and woke up today feeling normal, if a bit tired.

    Lovely Mother’s Day celebration with the family in Arlington. However, after driving there (30 miles) and driving back (same distance), I could do nothing but crash. I must be getting old or something. This week will be TOO BUSY! Yesterday I went to the Fireside Singers to find out about them. Today I’ll go to the Americana singers to see what they’re working on for Memorial Day. Still have to cover the Songbirds and the Chimes. (All this is for the survey of musical groups article.) We’re having a lovely morning, but it’s chilly. I WISH we could have some good news for a change!

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  14. Good morning,52 and light clouds outside my windows today. Comcast is doing maintence so no internet and my phone service is slow as well. My old iPad still has a phone connection but I can barely see the screen so looks I need to find something non digital to do. Ron is painting the garage wall….. no internet required for that! Best wishes to all.

  15. Good afternoon, meeses! Tuesday …

    It is 99 degrees right now but was higher earlier when the sun was out. My walk was at 7:30am and it was 86 and I cut it short at .82 of a mile. I need to start actively scheduling my morning walk earlier as the hot weather is not just “arriving” but here!

    I had my eyes dilated so my vision is a bit off. In theory it should wear off in 4 hours but we are past that. Lots of drops of stuff in my eyes feels like it left my eyes crusty.

    There will be three WNBA games tonight. I am anxious to see the Dallas Wings v Atlanta Dream. It is always fun to see Angel Reese play and the Wings have a lot of fun shooters.

    See all y’all later!
