Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: June 14th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. It’s 74 heading for 91 heat index 100 and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 18.37 KWHs and the m-t-d at 229.11 gained another smidge. We’re at least on track to get over 400 if not 500 this month.

    It would be the hottest predicted day this week that I do all my errands. But I need to do a Tractor Supply run for cats and wild birds – and see if they’ve got a plant food specifically for tomatoes as my AR Traveler has lots of bigger than normal leaves and no flowers on it. My library books are due and I’m almost out of peanut butter (because I’ve been eating that for a midmorning snack instead of the muffin bread I have when it’s cool enough to bake it). Meanwhile, my Social Security came in so sent off money to the two people I do monthly and now I need to be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  2. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind. It’s 71 F. in Ashburn, heading for a high of 84 F. It’s a lovely, pleasant day with low humidity.

    Yesterday was super-busy, with a memorial service in the morning followed by a visit to the foot doctor, then home for a rest, followed by a Meet-n-Greet with our Congressman, then a delightful dinner with Mike the Musician.

    Little Ethan’s graduation Monday evening was a beautifully arranged affair and lasted LESS THAN AN HOUR, thank Goddess. You could tell how hard the devoted parents and teachers had worked to arrange the stage, persuade the red and white balloons into marvelous patterns, and create the slideshow. Yes, it was a little noisy, but on the whole I’d rate it as half a Tylenol. Karl’s graduation last Friday was two full Tylenol. The fourth-grade parents had taken it on themselves to arrange a nice celebration for the graduating fifth-graders. They pooled their money and bought cakes, cookies, cut fruit, bags of chips, and ice-cold bottled water. It was nice to see how well-liked my son and DIL were by the other parents. All in all, a most pleasant event. Little Ethan was thrilled with the graduation present I gave him, which he opened after I left. I arrived home just as darkness fell. Thank Goddess for summer!

    This morning I was awakened by a nightmare at 5:30, so now I feel like having a nap. Have nails at 11, followed by a long lunch with my English friend at her house, then dinner with a dear man who has just become a widower. I know what he’s going through.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  3. Good morning, 56 and partly sunny in Bellingham today. Windows are open, fans are in place, Joe’s Gardens has amazing veggies for sale, Ron’s garden is growing…..summer is here. Best wishes to all.

  4. Good afternoon, meeses! Wednesday that feels like a Friday . .

    The backyard thermometer says 105 and the sun is shining and the weather widget says 95 and thunderstorms so I am leaning towards “backyard thermometer” as the most accurate. The radar does not show a cloud in the sky.

    I had a fragmented day and am finally sitting down to take a break. Our planned trip to the mountains will be postponed because we have a mechanical issue with the house that we need to be here for. It seems like air conditioning problems follow me around as we now have one here after suffering for 3 of the last 4 summers. Maybe that is just life in the desert. In any event, I have a portable a/c and I am waiting to hear from the vendor.

    See all y’all later!

    • Juneteenth is a big holiday here in True Blue Tucson. Lots of places will be closed. There not many Black folks living here but there are a lot of folks who are always up for parades and festivals.:)

  5. It’s 75 going up to 83 heat index 88 and overcast. Yesterday was possibly the last sunny day of the month. We generated 20.52 KWHs – the 1st and possibly only day over 20 in a month that’s capable of reaching 25 – and the m-t-d at 249.63 gained a little more ground.

    Lousy night. I think I got 3-1/2 hours of sleep added all together. Groggy and slow today. More than usual even. Natalia noticed a water spot on the ceiling right up by the north exterior wall next to he brickwork chimney. I’m hoping the last storm we had “just” blew the shingles over the eaves up and we don’t have a major problem. But I’ll be calling the roofing company that redid my roof 6 years ago and see just what “lifetime guarantee” means. sigh. Meanwhile I’d best be about my boosting day. Healing/Helping/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • Apparently we’re still within the “lifetime” of the guarantee – there will be a roofing crew here at 8 am to fix the leak. AND after we’ve had a couple of good rains to make sure it’s actually fixed, I’m supposed to call them back so they can send in an “interior crew” to fix the damage to the ceiling. At that’s what they told me when I called. I think I”m glad I went with Aspen Contractors 6 years ago. :)

    • I am not sure they have time for extra celebrations, it has been a whirlwind season so far! There are games on every night and a lot of surprises.

      Last night my two favorite teams, the Valkyries and the Wings, played and the Valkyries won. I like the players on both teams but the Wings organization is not very good, from the owners delaying building team facilities to their GM who was not held to account for last year’s mess and who chose their “gotta have a male” head coach. The Valkyries made an excellent free agency move getting Gabby Williams and an extra year of seasoning for their expansion roster has them in a pretty good place.

  6. Good morning. I’m home from work; I don’t feel bad, just weird. It’s like I have the dizzy part of a migraine (I just had to close my eyes at a really swoopy soccer commercial) without the pain. Waiting for the coverage of the Obama Center opening to begin. That won’t have any swoopy camera work.

  7. Good Thursday morning, Meese! It’s 74 F. and raining lightly in Ashburn. Today is an “empty square” day on my wall calendar, yay! I was very slow waking up this morning. It’s an ugly gray day, full of wind. I have nothing on unless and until Nora comes for dinner tonight.

    Just think, here we are at 18 June, nearly at July 1. And he isn’t dead yet! He’s still trampling through everything that used to make this country a cut above others (in some respects). That reminds me, at both graduations we were required to stand up and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. I hate to recite that, especially the part about “under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all—unless you’re black, Native American, female, LGBTQIA, or an immigrant.”

    I’m enjoying catching my breath on this slow, dark, windy, rainy day. After getting washed and brushed, I’ll start in on editing the book. Will I make it to the gym today? All across America people are waiting with bated breath to see if I finally do it (hasn’t happened in quite a while). Stay tuned!

    Bfitz and Anotherdemocrat, hope you get to feeling better. I hope the country will get to feeling better too. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • Yay for Blank Day! I have one tomorrow and will wake up and decide then what I will do.

  8. Good afternoon, meeses! Thursday that feels like a Friday …

    It is 100 and sunny. Last night we had storms in the area, we got some rain and a lot of thunder – already a pretty active monsoon season! Today the storms are south and east.

    I spent time on accounting and cleaning up a few little loose ends from being too busy yesterday and Tuesday. Now I am watching sporting events on TV.

    See all y’all later!

    • Having collard greens candied yams black eyed peas bbq and mashed potatoes today

    • I saw a tribute to “Black Excellence” in Indianapolis’ basketball arena before the Atlanta Dream played (and beat!) the racist-enabling Indiana Fever. I wonder if the owners who set up that promotion understand what that even means. It is fitting that the Atlanta Dream, named after the dream of Martin Luther King Jr, were the team playing the team embraced by their fans who hate everything about his dream and celebrating Black excellence.

      An article I scanned (behind a paywall) discussed how Juneteenth survived the attempts to completely eliminate any talk about the history of slavery and Black American excellence.

      “Juneteenth is surviving the corporate DEI backlash, even as American institutions pull back from the promises that helped elevate it. The holiday’s staying power shows how Black history can be absorbed into calendars, payroll systems and public rituals even as the post-2020 commitments that gave it renewed force are renamed, narrowed or abandoned.”

      Maybe we can use that tiny foothold to reclaim the history and re-educate people about the truth of America’s past, the good and the bad.

  9. Good morning. Didn’t walk, feel like I should take it easy. Preparations for a Juneteenth walk are underway across the street. One of three they mentioned on the news. Today is a “skeleton crew” day meaning we’re open but lots of people take it off. I’m going to try to stay most of the day.

  10. Good morning, meeses! Friday that feels like a Saturday …

    It is 73 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 99. Sunny skies are in the forecast. We had rain on Sunday night and Tuesday afternoon and evening and so far this years monsoon rain total is already 1/3 of the total of the entire monsoon from last year! Last year’s was sub-par, we got just under 3 inches, but it does bode well. We need to get over 5 inches for it to be considered a success. I look at that number in shock – that is just one summer storm in the Midwest. In any event, the season is off to a great start, our earth is thirsty. Now let’s hope the Saudi farmers who were given rights to Arizona water don’t use it all up.

    The Iran War is “ending” exactly how everyone except Lindsey Graham and John McCain expected it to end. Nothing has changed except that Iran is now stronger than they were before the conflict. They have the tinpot dictator that ignorant Americans elected to run their country by his male parts and now control him and, by extension, us. Happy 250th Birthday, MAGAt America! You did not heed the warning of Benjamin Franklin and chose not to keep the republic created in 1776. Fk you all with a rusty anvil. People are going to die as the orange garbage dumpster lashes out in anger and frustration over his embarrassment and impotence.

    Today is a holiday for Tucson and few will be working. I hope everyone takes a moment to ponder what the holiday celebrates. Even after losing a bloody war to keep people enslaved, people who refused to accept that “all men are created equal” extended to people of all colors refused to free the slaves in their jurisdiction. There are still large areas of the United States that feel that way and people who continue to try stop Black Americans from being full citizens. We are going to need another holiday when (if?) we defeat the Confederacy that lives in the minds and hearts of those who run the red states. It will remain a promise unkept until that happens.

    I have many things to do today as I have a messy desktop and stacks of half completed notes on things I am likely to lose track of.

    See all y’all later!

  11. It’s 68 heading for 84, heat index 88, and cloudy. Yesterday we generated 12.08 KWHs and the m-t-d at 261.71 lost more ground.

    I’m waiting on the roofing team to fix the leak in the roof. It’s hard to concentrate and get my day started when I’m waiting on repair folks of whatever nature. Interesting that all my emergencies this year are water-related – water pump in the car, drainage under the house, and water damage to the ceiling from a leak in the roof. With the solstice almost upon us, I hope this is it.

    Need to be about my boosting day. I can wait to close up the house for at least an hour. Holding the Healing/Helping/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • I hope the repair crews come early so you can get on with your day. I can never get anything done when I know that maintenance people are coming by – it doesn’t work well to get a project started and then have to set it aside and try to figure out where I was later.

      • The crew was only one guy. He got here only a few minutes late. Checked everything out, went to get what he needed, and fixed it. New flashing around the chimney, with new tarpaper and shingles to replace the ones in the leak area. But before he got here I acquired another problem. Somebody lost or dumped a gray kitten – not even half grown – who found its way to my backyard & backdoor and was mewing loudly. Came right up to me when I rattled a cup of kibble at him/her/it. Now residing more or less on my sunporch at least until tomorrow (that’s the earliest I could get a vet appointment) unless somebody comes by looking for their lost kitten. Sigh.

  12. Happy Juneteenth, Moosekind! It’s 72 F. and cloudy in Ashburger. Where is this rain we’re supposed to get before noon? Eh? Bueller? Bueller?

    I wish I could have a nap, but instead I have a pedicure at 10:30, a Diabetes Support Group meeting at 1, then an early dinner with three other people at one of the nicer restaurants. Granddaughter came to see me yesterday evening. She was wearing the tiniest pair of white shorts I’ve ever seen, a University of Virginia sweatshirt, and her long hair, which hangs to her elbows. Talk about a long-stemmed American Beauty rose—we didn’t have to wait long for a server to take our dinner order! We didn’t do much after dinner. She showed me how to order cluster false eyelashes and said she’d help me put them on. I showed her the outfit I plan to wear for Open Mic night, including the Poison Tiara. Then she went home.

    Keep feeling sleepy all the time. Is it because of the stress of living in Trumplemania? Every day there’s some new, awful happening, not to mention Hormuz. If the Rethugs get in again they want to cut Social, Medicare, and Medicaid. This week all references to slavery were removed from historic sites such as Sully Plantation (Fairfax County, Virginia). Do the Rethugs think people will forget that our forebears enslaved people? And ‘flu has broken out big time at a military post near San Antonio because they lifted the mandatory requirement for vaccinations. You can tell those Army guys are stupid. Oh, well, there’s nothing we can do about it.

    There are times when I think taking a soma-holiday is a good idea.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • Trumplemania! Excellent framing. I feel like every day more and more of our rights are trumpled on. I was just reading that the trumple-ers are spending billions of dollars to reimburse people whose renewable energy initiatives were started and then cancelled. Goddess help us all. Maybe I will learn Spanish and move to Spain which has their entire electric grid switched over to renewables and who were laughing at those frantic when the Strait of Hormuz was shut down.

  13. Good morning, 59 and sunny in Bellingham. Mixed medical news from me today…..Hans is doing much better and being very careful re managing all the meds so progress can continue. Spending part of the day at his house and meals and overnight here seems to be a good recovery plan.

    Unfortunately for me I’ve got an extremely painful TMJ flare up and the best med for it conflicts with warfarin so taking it is risky. But trigeminal nerve pain is truly awful so I’m taking the med regardless and thankfully it’s helping. Best wishes to all.

  14. Good morning. We had quite loud thunderstorms overnight, lucky the power didn’t go out. Getting ready for kickboxing. Going to take it easy, but I’m going because they’re working with me on being able to get up from the floor and I feel like, if they’re making that effort, so should I. Anyway, happy Saturday.

  15. it’s 67 heading for 86 heat index 92 and sunny at the moment but clouds supposed to move in about midday. Yesterday we generated 9.91 KWHs and the m-t-d at 276.62 lost more ground.

    Was wakened at 2:30 am by the sound of the intake hose to my bathroom toilet breaking and water gushing everywhere. Took me about 5 minutes to manage the house shutoff after not being able to budge the intake line shutoff. (Once the house water was off I was able to turn the intake line shutoff and turn the house water back on.) It took me an hour to sop up all the water on the floor, my slippers and the shoes I’d planned to wear today are still soaked and out on the porch to dry, and heaven only knows how many gallons drained down the HVAC vent into the ducts. I’ll call the vent guy after 8 to see what needs to be done about that. And my son to replace the intake hose. I couldn’t get back to sleep and after tossing and turning for another hour I turned on the lamp and read until dawn. Now I’m groggy as hell, my vision is blurry and I truly wish I could sleep in the daytime because I need it. Please Goddess this “curse” ends with the solstice. It’s too early to start boosting but not to early to set up for boosting. And I’ve got to take the kitten to the vet at noon. So I’d best be about that setting up. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • For Goddess’ sake, bfitz, you’ve had one bad happening after another! Wonder if the little gray kitten will turn out to have an owner or become a permanent resident. Let’s hope you can get the bathroom stuff fixed.

  16. Good Saturday morning, Meese, and blessed Summer Solstice! I do admit I love the long daylight. After today the light will gradually lessen.

    Had an awful night, not sure why—unless the restaurant screwed up and gave me a caffeinated cappuccino instead of the decaf I specified? Anyway, it’s sunny and 73 F. It would be a nice day if the wind weren’t blowing. On the agenda today are visiting the bank, doing a little shopping for makeup at Harris Teeter as I refuse to go to Target, and attending the Drama Club meeting, which, tiresomely, is being held at 1:30 p.m. instead of the more usual 2 p.m. Not much else is happening here.

    Will be mindful of other Meese’s troubles and hope they’re resolved shortly! Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!
