Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

  3. Good morning. Getting ready for work and kickboxing. Looking forward to trying that “get up from the floor” thing again. Nothing else going on here. Interesting primary results last night.

  4. It’s 69 humidity 100% heading for 81 heat index 85, starting out sunny but according to the widget that won’t last long. Sigh. Yesterday we generated 5.74 KWHs – which is just about enough to cover yesterday’s usage since the A/C didn’t cycle on – and the m-t-d at 317.58 got even further behind.

    Having a kitten in the house is a good thing. At least this kitten who is already meticulous about using the litter box and isn’t causing issues with the older cats. Never had a cat integrate so quickly before. But then I haven’t had a 2 month old cat in the house since Feb 1996. And he & his littermate brother were the only cats in the house. But she’s sweet and cute and very actively kitten. She brings a smile even when we’re most stressed and/or disheartened. Any new cat is expensive – at least if you get the exam and initial shots and all that – and there’s a spay in her future which is more expensive than the neuter for the boys. But it’s good to have her here.

    Doing double duty on the boosting – running a Mutual Aid thread at both Xitter and Bluesky – is time and personal energy (AKA spoons) consuming. But Xitter folks were so happy to have me back those 2 days I was banned from Bluesky and Bluesky folks worked so hard to get me reinstated. . . I can’t abandon either one.   5. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind! ‘Tis too delicious for words here in Ash-no-longer-quite-so-burned. We received 1.10 inches of rain yesterday before it finally stopped. Today, with the cold front, it will be a sedate 82 F. with very little WIND. One might actually go for a walk.

    Had a great time at “Open Mic” last night. The Poison Tiara was a great success, the silver shoes, having been successfully broken in, behaved beautifully, and the dress (floaty dark blue organza-type fabric over a dark blue underskirt)—well, I’ve always loved that dress. My date showed up, freaked out after 6 hours in heavy traffic, but rallied remarkably after a couple of glasses of white wine. When one of my favorite guys showed up, he rallied the troops, so to speak. First, he got us to line dancing, which I emphatically do not know how to do. Second, he decreed a “change partners after 45 seconds” dance, which enabled me to dance with another favorite guy. It was sad that this was the last “Open Mic” because the pianist was retiring. Still, we all have to retire some time.

    Enjoying a second cup of coffee because on Friday I have to see the vampire, and without food and drink I will be a bitter, mean old bee-yatch. I just might nip out to Lidl tomorrow morning early to stockpile some hazelnut croissants to comfort myself when the vampire releases me on Friday.

    As a bonus, last night, after leaving the dance hall with my date, I saw Herself! She was half-full and looked so lovely in the clear summer night sky. It’s so often foggy here that I hadn’t seen her in ages. That was the cherry on the sundae, believe me.

    Still in my dressing gown, need to get moving. Wish a good day to all at the Pond!

  6. Good evening, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is 102 degrees and the possibility of rain literally vaporized. The moon is heading to full and I see her every night before bedtime so that is soothing.

    We have discovered that in our new neighborhood when it is very hot, everyone gets home from work at the same time, cranks up their a/c to max and takes down the power grid. Two nights in a row we lost power – the first night just a flicker but last night it was 5 seconds and took down computers and the TV. So this morning I bought a battery backup to keep the computers up for quick power outages because I often leave documents open with reminders of things I need to do in the morning. Plus it is not a good idea to abruptly remove power from a device! I am hoping that having the battery backup means that I will never lose power again! :)

  8. Good morning. It is crazy hot, but less hot weather than France. I’m genuinely worried about Le Tour. Riders are going to get sick, and the fans who camp out will, also. They should postpone it to September. Packed gym stuff, will get in 30 minutes of weight lifting. I might get a taco after.

  9. Already 71 humidity 95% heading for 83 heat index 90. It’s sunny at the moment but clouds are supposed to move in soon. Sigh. Yesterday we generated 5.44 KWHs (lowest single day of the month – so far) and the m-t-d at 323.02 is sadly so far behind that we might not make it to 400 this month and 450 would only be possible if the rest of the month – including today – was sunnier than we’ve had all year.

    I’m still keeping little Jenny in the bathroom overnight but that’s more so she’ll eat the Hill’s kitten food instead of the adult Purina One than that I’m worried about the boy’s hurting her. They’ve accepted her remarkably quickly – thank Goddess – with Bobbie even grooming her at times. (Funny thing, she appeared on my doorstep on my youngest grandson’s 14th birthday.)

    Don’t know why I’m so groggy this morning but it’s certainly slowing me down. I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  11. Good Thursday morning, Meese! Gorgeous day, 79 F. right now in Ashburn. Earlier, I went out to buy an almond croissant and a hazelnut croissant at Lidl, along with blackberries and cappuccino pods. Anticipation of enjoying those tomorrow should make me able to endure the vampire. Three hours with no food or drink! Sheet!

    At 1 today I’m going next door to watch a presentation of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee. The LGBT community of Ashby has made a film of their coming out stories and so on. Then tonight I have a dinner date with a dear man who has studied Greek in the past. He knew what my email name, “kalliste,” means.

    Lawks, I feel sleepy! When I come home from the presentation, I’m going to have a huge, beautiful nap.

  12. Good morning, 62 and cloudy with rain expected later today. Hans continues to mend and PT this morning went well. I’ve had a quiet morning, but Sue will be here soon so I need to get the laundry going. Best wishes to all.

  13. Good afternoon, meeses! Thursday …

    It is 106 degrees at 4pm, down from 111 at mid-day. There are clouds to the north and they might be part of a system moving through but maybe not.

    I did not take a walk because I got caught up in trying to document a handful of critical project follow-ups that had been stacking up for days and I did not want to break. I did not get completely done but I am about 80% there. I should be able to finish tomorrow.

    I am watching sporting events taped yesterday and have my feet up.

      • Wednesday night’s replays were much more satisfying to watch than Thursday night’s live games. It is going to be really difficult for anyone to beat the Las Vegas Aces – their players are so talented and their bench so deep. I hope the Liberty can stay healthy and at least give them a run for their money.

  15. Good morning. Didn’t make it to the gym yesterday, will try again today. Repeating my observation that it is crazy hot here, but it’s worse in France. Which should have everyone’s hair on fire, but it hasn’t been on the news at all. My big project for the weekend is writing about the Romancing the Vote fundraiser next week.

    It is 81 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 102. Sunny skies are in the forecast. We are expected to drop back into the high 90s next week. June is one of our hottest months so it is expected but it is always a shock for this old Midwesterner to see the thermometer in triple digits! Yesterday evening, we had clouds that looked like they contained moisture over the mountains and a few rumbles of thunder but no rain made it to the ground here.

    I scanned the headlines and it was very discouraging to see that the Republican Party’s Supreme Court gave victories to those who do not value human life: Roundup, tRump’s border goons, people who want the right to commit mass murders. All that on top of the Republicans voting to starve hungry people – maybe they hope the poors will die before they can vote their sorry asses out of office in November. SNAP cuts will drop 4.7 million people from their rolls. In the olden days, maybe some billionaire philanthropists would step in to help fund food banks but the 21st century billionaires are only interested in amassing more wealth and destroying any and all government institutions that might seek to control their activities. Goddess help those who will suffer from the actions of those who voted so thoughtlessly – or didn’t vote at all – in 2016 and in 2024.

    I am going to work on the last remnants of scattered notes from this week’s crises. I think I have my computer issues cleared up but I have to decide if I should retire an older computer that is getting more difficult to keep running and if I should get a new computer or if I should just work off my laptop for the activities that had been done there. The laptop is just fine and I rarely use it for travel any longer because I don’t go anywhere.

  17. It’s 75 & very humid heading for 85 heat index 90-something and already overcast. Yesterday we generated 11.33 KWHs and the m-t-d at 334.35 is even more behind. We probably won’t be in last place for production this year but it’ll be close.

    A/C cycled on yesterday around 3:30 and it never cooled down enough to open the house. Looking at the 10-day on the widget it’s not going to cool down enough to open the house for a while. sigh. All the more need for sunny days to generate the electricity for the A/C. Cats are not happy about not having open windows. But otherwise cats are OK. With Freddie at almost 8 acting more kittenish and Bobbie at almost 6 acting less kittenish having an actual kitten in the house. Cloud’s still largely ignoring her. The OA injection finally kicked in yesterday afternoon so I stopped the gabapentin. If he starts pulling out his fur again, I’ll start it up again. I should say when rather than if. And take that as the sign that the OA injection was worn off.

    Natalia’s Happy Retirement party last night was apparently fun and very touching. But now it feels weird to go back to work these last 3 days. I remember that sensation from 8 going on 9 years back when I retired.

    Meanwhile the month winds down and along with the folks who have to CF for food and shelter daily now the folks who need help with monthly rent & bills are showing up in my threads. So I’d best get to boosting. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  18. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! It’s 80 F. under cloudy skies in Ashburn, thunderstorms expected tomorrow.

    I just came back from the vampire, who couldn’t find a good vein the first time, so she jabbed me twice. I returned home at 9, had cantaloupe, croissants, and cappuccino—everything that starts with a “c”—and now feel full.

    Last night at the restaurant, despite my date’s having made reservations for 6:30, it was 7 before we were seated. I’ve got to say the food was excellent. I was rather glad to eat late because that kept me from feeling too hungry at 6, when I woke up.

    Received a sweet note from the newlyweds in Columbus, thanking me for attending their wedding and saying that their friends kept raving to them about “your Granny’s blue ensemble.” Yep, I wore it all, the shirred royal blue dress, blue hat with a veil, royal blue opera gloves.

    Isn’t it true the affordability bill would pass even if he doesn’t sign it for 10 days? Does he know that or is he too stupid? The WaPo averred this morning that people are moving to the South. What on earth for? Lots of interference in school curricula, guns rampant everywhere, no vaccinations for kids, tornadoes and hurricanes—who’d want to move South? Don’t understand it. ‘Course, this was the Post, so it could all be a lie. Virginia is supposedly part of the South, but our weather isn’t quite as bad as it is in other places. And last time I checked, there weren’t any alligators.

  19. Good morning, 59 and cloudy with rain in the night. We have stopped watering the lawn so the rain is needed. Bri has got a drip line watering system on place for the main garden beds so our garden watering will be easier now as well. I’m still adjusting to having fewer plants and flowers to care for but not having a long list of garden chores is wise for me this year. As always, my best wishes to all.
