Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: May 3rd

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  2. Good morning. We might get rain today – hey, when you’re in severe drought, rain is exciting. Will go to kickboxing at lunch.

  3. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind! It’s 65 F. in Ashburned. Like anotherdemocrat’s area, ours is in severe drought.

It’s raining gently outside, which is nice. At 10 a.m. I am to attend a director’s workshop, then before meeting a friend for dinner late this afternoon I have a lot to do: it’s to be hoped I can work in some exercise. Will be starting the editing of the 87,000-word novel today, in addition to lining up interviews for the two articles I have to write.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.

    • I was surprised to see how many areas of the country are in drought and severe drought. Drought used to be reserved for the western states; who would think that places as moist as Florida and Virginia and Wisconsin would be in drought? Might it be – could it be?? – global climate change? :::insert eyeroll here:::

  4. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

It is 54 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 73. Sunny skies are in the forecast. This will be the last cool day for a while, the front that brought the rain cooled us off but gave way to a new front that is bringing hot and then very hot weather, 100s by next week! I am glad we had the break and the rain. Nearly an inch on Mount Lemmon.

Scanning the news, looking for glimmers of hope. I guess it was too much to expect that the chickens would come to roost on the Republican Party’s embrace of thuggery, stupidity and endless war and give Democrats a chance to win a few elections. But the Republicans know that the only way they can win elections is to stop people who do not like them from voting and they are now frantic to re-gerrymander themselves into power. Those who were hoping that the Supreme Court’s Purcell Rule would cool things down but the “don’t mess with elections too close to elections” rule is only in force when Democrats have a possible advantage. This year’s elections will be open to rat-fking all the way until November 3rd. They are already literally tossing out people’s cast votes in Louisiana! JHC on a popsicle stick!!

I completed the penultimate phase of a year long project and will be working on winding down and setting up new procedures to wrap up. But the frantic part is done and I will be able to reclaim my weekends which had to be turned over to “working on people’s computers when they are not there.”

    See all y’all later!

  5. It’s 48 heading for 61 with lots of clouds and a less than 10% chance of rain. Sigh. Yesterday we generated 5.97 KWHs and the m-t-d at 83.9 while still on track lost ground. And will lose more today.

    I’ve got molasses spice muffin bread in the oven right now and the house smells lovely. It’s a day early – as in I still have a slice of the peanut butter muffin bread I made 3 weeks ago left – but I’m not wasting a cool baking day. LOL. Will have a fire again this evening and probably one tomorrow evening before it warms up again. At least the overnights are staying above freezing so we aren’t losing any plants. In fact the roses are still going. They seem to like this up and down weather as long as it doesn’t actually freeze. Wish I could think of anything else good going on. Other than we’re all still here. Now I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  6. Thursday Meese. 48 here in Kingston going up to 62.

  7. Good morning. Got my mile walked, just barely. In the office, convincing myself I can do this till 5. I like my job, just hate in-office days.

  8. It’s 42 heading for 70 and sunny today. Yesterday we generated 10.73 KWHs and the m-t-d at 94.65 is no longer on track. sigh.

    There’s volunteer who-knows-what growing on the other side of my fence on west and north sides which is good and not so good. Both are the same – it obscures my view of what’s on the other side. So while I can’t see all the ugly the developer’s construction crew has done (most of it but not all) I also can’t see what they’re doing now. Whatever it is, it’s noisy, takes a lot of zooming back and forth of earth-moving/heavy equipment, and raises/produces a lot of dust. Apparently from the signage on Weddington this is going to be a more-or-less gated community without the gate (can’t – I hope – close off public roads). Equally apparently from the signage they’ll be done by August because that’s when the houses become available. At least the construction part will be over. The ugly won’t go away but there’ll be less noise and dust. Meanwhile I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healting/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  9. Good morning, meeses! Thursday …

It is 54 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 82. Sunny skies are in the forecast. This morning the waning gibbous moon was in the SSE sky, shining in through my bedroom window. I had not seen her in a while and was surprised she was still so bright, at 72% illumination!

A quick scan of the news:
    – Areas where there have been mass deportations have lower employment. Turns out that deporting all the foreign born workers or scaring them into hiding does not open up new jobs for “Real Muricans”. Who knew that would happen (besides every sentient being)?
    – Investors are using the orange pustule’s pronouncements on the Iran War to make literally billions in the oil futures market. Who knew that would happen (besides every sentient being)?
    – The birth rate in America and many other countries is dropping because the future looks glum after the stability of governments and the economy has been called into question for now almost two decades. Who knew that would happen (besides every sentient being)?

It is a good time to be a sports fan with College Softball conference tournaments, the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse tournament starting and tomorrow the WNBA season starting.

I have many little projects to do and one left over project from April that is screaming at me to finish so I best get back to it.

    See all y’all later!

  10. Good Thursday afternoon, Meese!

Today is getting off to a very slow start. Fell asleep after breakfast even though I had a pretty good night. Don’t know why I’m so tired all the time. Must get myself ready and on the road. The grandchildren may be coming for dinner tonight.

Turns out the actions of murderous ICE and the deportation hellhole prisons are extremely off-putting to the FIFA players who were planning to play over here during the World Cup games. They won’t come. Mango will be responsible for the loss of billions of dollars! Stupid git.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  12. Good morning. Did my walk, in the office. Had a terrible night’s sleep, but what else is new. Got to hang on until 5.

  13. It’s 53 heading for 78 and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 20.34 KWHs and the m-t-d at 115 gained a little. With a 30% chance of rain about sundown we’re 100% guaranteed that clouds will move in. When is the issue. We shall see what we shall see.

    I ordered supplements yesterday. The confirmation email said “due to high volume your order may not ship for 7 business days”. Then just before bedtime I got an email saying it had shipped. Solaray fulfillment must have taken lessons from Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott. And good for them. LOL. I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  14. Good Friday morning, Moosekind!

We have 60 F. under sunny skies here in Ashburn. Had another wretched night because of the coughing. Must make a dr appt one of these days. Anotherdemocrat, I feel your pain because of the bad night.

Feeling deeply thankful that Younger Son came over yesterday and straightened out my airline mess for me. The reservations I thought I made in January for grandson’s wedding at the end of this month in Ohio turned out to be illusory. I even had confirmation numbers! However, Trevor got on the phone, rebooked the flights, and also booked flights for our family excursion to the U.K. in August. I have a Real ID driver’s license so I presume that will be good enough for a flight to Columbus, Ohio.

This morning I have errands and this afternoon, hanging out with the UUs. A UU minister is having a meeting to talk about rituals. Then this evening there’s the UU dinner, so I have a busy day.

Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  15. Good morning, 52 and cloudy outside my windows today. Sorry I’ve been absent lately. For some reason this arthritis flare has been hard to cope with but I think/hope it’s easing. Deep rest still helps but I have to really shut down to it. So frustrating to have a disease with so few treatment options. Best wishes to all.

    • We missed you! Sorry to hear that the lack of treatment options keeps getting in the way of comfort and mobility. I wish they could find something that would work. Have you thought about finding out about new medical breakthroughs through some programs at the university? I had a medical malady arise last year but I was lucky that it was a condition that had lots and lots of research dedicated to it, a plethora of tried and true treatment options and a 99.1% 5 year survival rate. I hope the Republicans don’t kill all the science and that the medical researchers can keep their projects going until sanity returns.

      • The last round of PT focused on helping me cope with the reality I live with. Unfortunately the damage from the blood clots makes surgery too risky so no joint replacements. The arthritis is widespread now and most of the pain is coming from my spine. I have to take coumadin and that means stronger pain relief meds will put me at risk for a severe GI bleed. Keith (PT) reviewed all possible treatment options and for me rest and light activity is safest. I have a set of careful exercises to do, my new walkers help but only if I use them. Losing 20 lbs would make a significant difference with my knees, ankles and feet joints but I can’t seem to do that. So coping as best I can is what I’m trying to do but some times I run out of steam. Oh well, arthritis is not a life threatening disease but it is damn hard to live with!

        • I am glad you have a good PT, I hope he stays part of your care team for a long time. I am not sure how you would be expected to lose 20 lbs with “rest and light activity.” I have been fighting a losing battle with my weight for years. I am not sure I am willing to give up the pleasure of an occasional dish of ice cream or Mango cheesecake to get closer to what a better weight for me would be.

  16. Good morning, meeses! Friday …

It is already 91 degrees and probably headed to 95. Sunny skies. I saw my moon this morning!

Yesterday I took my walk in the late afternoon after the skies clouded up but I do not think that will happen today. I have to cut back from my 1.50 mile walks when it is too hot. I think my new work schedule may allow me to walk earlier in the day. Usually that is prime work time so it is not available but with the work shifting to later in the day, it will become an option.

My Badger softball team advanced to the semifinal round by beating their nemesis the Oregon Ducks. They will have to get past UCLA to get to the championship game but they weren’t supposed to get this far so anything is possible. The WNBA starts tonight and I think my new team will be the Golden State Valkyries. The first round of the Women’s Lacrosse tournament is today and tomorrow is the Pro Volleyball Championship game – one of the teams has a couple of former Badgers on it. Woohoo!!

    See all y’all later!

  17. Saturday Meese Cancer doc put me on a new med –Prednisone. Hope it helps.

    • The Arizona Science Center event sounds like fun! I am shocked that the right-wing haters in the Arizona state legislature haven’t tried to shut it down – it would not please their cult leader to see science and Bad Bunny lauded. It it wasn’t such a dangerous undertaking to drive to Phoenix, I would try to see it. They should bring the show to Tucson.

Good luck with the new medicine. What are they trying to do with the Prednisone, reduce inflammation?

  18. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

It is 66 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 93. Sunny skies are in the forecast. The last quarter moon is high in the SSE sky, beaming down on me!

The Golden State Valkyries WNBA team won and it looks like they will be a fun team to watch. The Toronto Tempo, in their first home game as an expansion franchise, came up short against the Washington Mystics. I was wondering if a team from Washington DC invading Canada and defeating their team in Toronto would create an international incident! :) In any event, I think that the Toronto team missed the boat on team colors, uniforms and logos. It probably put the fans asleep. I guess not getting blown out by a team stocked with draft picks from three years of losing and smart trades is cause to celebrate. But I did want them to win their first game.

I am hunkered down for some quiet work on my computer this morning. One project to finish then I can start clearing my Inbox and my To-Do stack and putting together a good work list for next week. I plan to take tomorrow (Sunday) off and I don’t want any urgent work projects hanging over me.

    See all y’all later!

  19. Good morning. I’m going to kickboxing even though my back is stiff, will be careful – I just hope this will loosen it up. And normal Saturday of groceries and housework. I hope everyone has a good day.
