Week-long Welcomings from Moosylvania: June 7th

Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).

The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.

So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?

NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. To see the older comments, scroll to the bottom of the page (right before “Leave A Reply”) and use the Pages Tool to view previous pages, shown here with 3 pages of comments available and Page 2 circled.

  1. It’s 77 heading for 90 heat index 95 and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 19.82 KWHs and the m-t-d at 120.64 gained a smidge.

    A/C cycled on all night and was about to again at 6:15 this morning even with the thermostat at 78. I dialed it down to 72 (it came on when I touched the dial before I even moved it at all) and it’s still running. I’m cold. Will probably have to put on a wrap of some kind across my shoulders if not at least a 2nd shirt. Heck I may have to change out of my shorts to long pants. But hopefully by the time the vent guy gets here and takes out that hunk of vent so the plumber can get to the pipes tomorrow morning the house will be cool enough so we can sleep tonight. Well, cool enough that heat isn’t the reason I’m not sleeping. Sinusitis is the usual reason I can’t sleep and that’s not going to be changed by a cooler house. Meanwhile I’d best get my groggy self about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody.

  2. Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind! It had rained lightly by the time I woke up, but now we have tentative sunlight and partly cloudy skies. The high will be 87 F. “They” are predicting thunderstorms for the afternoon, but we all know how accurate they are.

    I was meant to go to a garden party this morning but I just don’t feel up to it, and I don’t want to get my shoes dirty. Did make Peach Bran Muffins this morning and they were delicious! If they weren’t so fussy I’d make them once a week. Have some chores to do before I can relax this afternoon. I have to make a lavender simple syrup for the lemonade tomorrow.

    Still feeling shattered that the upcoming Open Mic night will be the last one here because the pianist is retiring. OMG, I have a closetful of pretty dance dresses, and the silver shoes arrived yesterday but I’m too dispirited to try them on; Platner the Ghastly won in Maine last night; mah Social and everyone else’s will be cut by 22% in 2036, so what’s to do? I’ll either have to die or get a job as a Mall*Wart greeter.

    Well, off to get washed and brushed and start work. Gods, I hate laundry and doing the dishes. I have a date for dinner tonight and am wondering what a Mary Kay salad is. They’re serving that at the restaurant we’re going to.

    Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

    • Sad about Maine. If he wins, he will be another freaking Fetterman, voting with the Republicans just to tick people off. I never thought I’d say it but I hope Collins wins. We don’t need garbage people from either party in the Senate.

  3. Good morning, meeses! Wednesday …

    It is either 91 or 107 and sunny. Yesterday I took my “walk” in the pool and it felt very much like a regular walk. Today, I am going to map out a path in the house to get myself to a half mile so I can take an indoor walk that will stretch my legs. The moon continues to wane and will become new on the 14th. I have seen her daily since the full moon which has been a treat. Some months she is out of sight for long periods of time.

    I am working through some projects and I have made some progress. I will work for another hour then break for the day. Yesterday I got my hairs cut so I have no where I need to go today, hurray!

    See all y’all later!

  4. Good morning, 55 and cloudy outside my windows today. Our son is getting stronger and the injuries are healing but he still needs pain meds. He was able to climb the stairs last night and with a stool enjoy a shower in the more accessible upstairs bathroom. For now he is recliner based, but tomorrow he should be able to use the bed. PT at the hospital was very clear re what he can do and how to do it. I’m relieved his thinking is clear so he can keep the meds and instructions sorted. He sees a new Doc on Friday and now that he can manage stairs getting him there will be relatively easy. He is pain limited re using his arms, so that will need to improve before he can go home to his house. Last night he was worrying about disrupting our life, but we laughed when it said……”it’s like Christmas, we get all the stuff in place and then just live with it for the season. So now we’ve got convalescent stuff in place and we’ll just live with it for the duration.” I’m doing ok, feeling less worried and more able to rest when I need to. Best wishes to all.

  5. Still under heat advisory here in Kingston. Go Knicks!

  6. Hi. Happy Thursday. Walked in the 79-degree sauna that is Austin right now. In the office. Why are offices? Adding to my “if I get a time machine” list to disrupt the idea of working in offices. I’ll watch a replay of today’s stage of the bike race, because it starts at 8, and “office”.

    • How I agree with you, another! Managers should evaluate by performance, not face time. It is SO much pleasanter to work at home and have a view out of the window, the opportunity to breathe fresh air, and to be away from office politics, interruptions, useless meetings and lunches, and gossip. I was never happier in my so-called career than when I worked at home and could listen to music and rest my feet on the nearest beagle.

  7. It’s 78 heat index 85 heading for 89 heat index 97 and sunny at the moment. Yesterday we generated 16.15 KWHs which is less that I used running the A/C. The m-t-d at 136.79 lost more ground.

    Thank heavens we have A/C! Once the vent guy removed the section that’s in the way of the drain pipes and capped off both ends, he said it was safe to run it as long as the thermostat wasn’t set too low (or the coils could freeze over). But the temp he named was one I wouldn’t do anyway. He said 78 – my usual setting – should be fine. And what’s as good or better is that the only vents that cut-off section serves is the bathrooms. Which I don’t really like having A/C in anyway. (But I do like heat in the bathrooms so yes he’ll be coming to replace the vent/duct either this afternoon or early in the morning. The plumber should be here in another hour. So by tomorrow latest we should be back to what passes for normal around here.

    Lousy night. One muscle or another in my feet & lower legs decided between 10:30 pm and 2 am were grand times to spasm. Sigh. At least the sinusitis let up. Anyway, I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

    • Dear Goddess, one can only hope today will be better, bfitz! Sorry about the muscle spasms. I use frankincense and myrrh cream from the Mighty South American river. It smells heavenly and it works!

      • {{{Diana}}} I’m hoping we’ve come to the end of the curse or whatever caused all these unhelpful and expensive things to hit at once. I’m pretty sure the muscle spasms were related to being cold all day yesterday. I had the thermostat set at 72 from the time I got up yesterday morning until the vent guy came to cool the house done just in case we wouldn’t be able to use A/C overnight. Now we’re back to the 78 thermostat setting I think I’ll be fine. Moar {{{HUGS}}}

        • There is no Mercury Retrograde but there must be some chaotic transit as things are going awry here and there. I hope it passes soon!

  8. Good Thursday morning, Meese! We had a nice thunderstorm yesterday, which deposited .57 of an inch of rain—gratefully received. Right now in Ashburn it’s 82 F., tentatively sunny with a very pale blue sky, and will go up to 94 F. or worse. Last night I stuck my nose out the door on the way to bed and the air was like a thick, heavy blanket. Thank Goddess for air conditioning!

    It’s 82 F. humid degrees here, with a high of 101 F. and thunderstorms this afternoon! Hope the storms get themselves overwith El Fasto because Nora is coming over for dinner.

    Busy day today: must make the lavender scones, stir the clotted cream, carefully pour the lavender lemonade into the thermos, which has been chillin’ in the fridge, and packing all the food into the cart. Need to get the wrinkles out of the pretty summer tablecloth, too. After the writers’ meeting, home to rest before the Happy Hour Singers at 4:30, then wait for Miss Nora to arrive at 6. Oh, and don’t forget the writerly chores: take a final look at this month’s writers’ submissions, then find the relevant passages about dialogue tag lines in McGraw’s Techniques of Fiction Writing book, provide examples from the author’s book, and type them into an email for the author. Does that sound like enough?

    Prayers for all those who are ailing. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  9. Good afternoon, meeses! Thursday…

    It is 100 degrees with a few scattered clouds. I got my walk in this morning before it got over 90 so I feel good about that.

    I am convinced that I got shortchanged and someone took one of my days away! How can it already be Thursday, actually the end of Thursday! I will have to put my nose to the grindstone tomorrow to meet my deadlines.

    See all y’all later!

      • I can make you an editor then you can edit all the comments.

        I haven’t been able to find an editor that works with our comment toolbar. I don’t want to give up the buttons.

  10. Good morning. Hard time getting started today. Hope everyone has a good day.

  11. It’s 73 heading for 85 heat index 90 and overcast. Of course. Yesterday we generated 14.83 KWHs and the m-t-d at 152.62 lost more ground. Sigh.

    The lack of sunshine that’s curtailing my electricity production isn’t particularly good for my mental health – and I haven’t seen the moon since the day before she was full. The vent guy should be here within the hour and once the vent’s replaced hopeful that is that for “things going awry” – for everybody. There’s enough going awry in the wider world. We need our calm and relative comfort to deal with that. So. Off to start my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}

  12. Good Friday morning, Moosekind! It’s already 81 F. on a sunny morning in Ashburn. Yesterday at 7 p.m. it was 91 F. when the windstorm and heavy rain began. Nora and I had finished dinner around 7 p.m., and I’d given her a leftover lavender scone with clotted cream and raspberry jam when the storm started. She had to hustle to stop at Wawa for gasoline and then to scurry home.

    Yesterday was successful with the lavender scones (they turned out really well), the writers’ group, and the Happy Hour Singers. I saw many of my favorite people there.

    I need to leave here at 10:30 to ge4t to my son’s house in Fairfax, Virginia. Twelve-year-old Karl is graduating from Navy Elementary today. The ceremony will be held at Oakton High School, which his father attended. Karl will be in the 7th grade at Rachel Carson Middle School, which sends more students to the prestigious Thomas Jefferson high school than any other middle school.

    Got to rush. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!

  13. Good morning, 61 and partly sunny in Bellingham today. Hans is continuing to mend but having limited use of his arms is still a reality so I hope the new doc will work with him re pain management so he can keep moving. I have a hair appointment this afternoon and some desk work to do this morning Best wishes to all.

  14. Good evening, meeses! Friday …

    It is still in the 90s even though the sun is down.

    Busy day but I completed a project that has been on my to do list for a month. Maybe I can sleep in now.

    See all y’all tomorrow!

    • You were already an editor but I added what I think is the capability to update comments. When you check in next, see if there is a an EDIT link at the end of the date/time stamp on your comment. It should look like this:

      June 13, 2026 at 12:28 am Edit

      If you don’t see the “Edit” at the end then you may have to go in through the Dashboard to edit comments. Click on My Moose to get the Dashboard then scroll down to Recent Comments. If the feature is working you will see some links under each user’s comment when you hover over it. It shows this:

      Unapprove | Reply | Edit | History | Spam | Trash | View

      If you scroll down to your comment, you should be able to Edit it.

      Let me know if it works. There is a lot of discussion suggesting that Editors already have comment editing rights but then they provide backend code which I don’t want to have to do. With “free code” you get what you pay for!!

      It may be time to review Comment Editor Plug-ins again. Maybe someone reanimated the one we really loved, the one that gave us Comment Preview as well.

  16. Good morning. Getting ready to go to kickboxing. They are working on helping me be able to get up from the floor – told me a thing to try as I walk up the steps into work in the mornings. She showed me a thing last week, but it involved being on the floor & I was too scared to try it. Maybe today. Anyway – I am hosting the music diary at the orange place tonight, 6pm central. My theme is protest music from artists….of a certain age. U2, Springsteen. Bette Midler and others over 60 have done some pretty great music against the buffoon on the White House. Come share your favorite protest music, doesn’t have to be from the older people.

  17. Good morning, meeses! Saturday …

    It is 79 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 99. Partly cloudy skies are in the forecast. Right now there are what look like storm clouds over the mountains but I don’t think we will get rain. MAYBE tomorrow though. The waning crescent moon is at 4% illumination but I am unlikely to see her because she is where the clouds are. New Moon tomorrow (Sunday) at 7:54pm MST. I am looking forward to grabbing some waxing energy.

    I am going to go “news lite” this weekend. The hair-on-fire season has started and people are freaking out over polls that are for elections that are 5 months out (4 months if you count early voting). A lot can change and a lot can also not change including the anger that ordinary Americans feel about inflation and the Iran war. This time around people know that the gas prices are because of a war started to please Lindsey Graham and the mouldering bones of John McCain. There is no time to turn around the polling numbers because the money spent to buy gas and groceries and rent for many people came from savings or credit card debt which is permanent. When they look at their finances in November, they will not be as likely to say “let’s vote for Republicans who will end inflation and give me cheap eggs and gas.” We may be at the end of the “fool me dozens of times, oh well!” cycle that voters have been on. We shall see!

    I had a fairly productive day yesterday, woke up somewhat refreshed and I have nothing urgent that has to be done except some accounting things that I want to get ahead of.

    See all y’all later!

  18. It’s 76 heading for 88 heat index 96 and the sun is trying to break through the clouds. Yesterday we generated 16.58 KWHs and the m-t-d at 168.2 lost more ground. sigh.

    We’ve got a cooler spell moving in overnight. Might be able to open up in the morning, possibly go most if not all the day without the A/C cycling on, and should definitely be able to open up overnight tomorrow. Be nice. Make up a little for having run the A/C at 72 on Wednesday. At this point there is so much evil going on that I’m just praying for “highest good for all concerned” because I myself don’t see a way out. Meanwhile I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
