Welcome to The Moose Pond! The Welcomings posts give the Moose, old and new, a place to visit and share words about the weather, life, the world at large and the small parts of Moosylvania that we each inhabit.

Welcomings will be posted at the start of each week (usually Saturday night with a Sunday date). To find the posts, just bookmark this link and Voila! (which is Moose for “I found everyone!!”).
The format is simple: each day, the first moose to arrive on-line will post a comment welcoming the new day and complaining (or bragging!) about their weather. Or mentioning an interesting or thought provoking news item. Or simply checking in.
So … what’s going on in your part of Moosylvania?
…
NOTE: The comments page will split off after 20 or so left margin comments with the most recent comments on the current page. Good evening, meeses! Tuesday …
It was relatively cool today, in the low 80s, and clouds moved in mid-afternoon. I had errands to run again and everything ran long making me grumpy and seriously behind on projects.
See all y’all tomorrow!
Wednesday Meese. Still very warm here in Kingston today – but we are getting rain.
Good morning. We had thunderstorms overnight, some damage and trees down but not a big deal. I voted yesterday, no waiting at all – sad that so few are voting. Getting ready for work, will go to kickboxing at lunch.
It’s 60 heading for 69, raining, and dark enough the PV system is still in night mode. Yesterday we generated 2.02 KWHs which isn’t even as much as I use in a no-A/C day. The m-t-d at 290.97 lost more ground. At least we’ve already generated more electricity than I use in a no-A/C month and as long as we can not have to use the A/C (or not use it much) for the rest of May we’ll be OK.
Looks like Lang isn’t going to do his “checkride” – exam for his pilot’s license today. Sigh. Natalia’s got troubles in the family – an in-law causing it, of course – and is trying to figure out what she can do to calm things down. Which may be nothing. But since it’s also dealing with the estate trust their parents left to the 4 of them equally something will have to be done regarding that part of it. sigh. Meanwhile I need to go the bank, library, and grocery store later today so I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
Good Wednesday morning, Moosekind! Right now in Ashburn it’s 85 glorious degrees F. and sunny. By noon clouds will gather, and by 3 p.m. They Say it will rain. In fact, it will continue to be rainy and cloudy right through Sunday! Blast. Happy to see the rain if we do in fact receive any, but I’ll miss the sun and the warmth. Must get out in it before it disappears.
Saw a thin, thrilling crescent of Moon last night, walking back to my building after the concert. My friend insisted there was a conjunction of the Moon, Venus, and Jupiter, but I couldn’t see it. He loved the concert, which was billed as a tribute to Roberta Flack. I didn’t like it at all! Less talking and more music, please, I thought, and the way the singer rendered the songs—well, if I hadn’t known the lyrics already, I never would have understood the only two songs I recognized. To me, the so-called tribute did not do justice to one of my favorite singers.
Got to get to work. Will nip out for a little sunshine this morning. I’ve arranged my dinner date, so that’s OK. And Ah got mah Social, so ’tis a grand immortal day already!
Wishing a good day to all at the Pond.
Good afternoon, meeses! Wednesday …
It is 82 on the widget, 95 on the backyard thermometer and 90 on the front yard thermometer. Definitely cloudy with periods of sunshine. I got my walk in.
I know it will never happen but wouldn’t it be refreshing if the Republican Party was held accountable for the damage being done to our democracy because they refuse to block the clearly illegal and immoral acts of their cult leader? I hope some of it can be undone. For my part, I refuse to acknowledge that this is the 250th year of our democracy because it was paused on January 21, 2025 when easily duped people installed a dictator and one of our political parties refused to restrain his worst impulses. I have no pride in what has been allowed to happen. Maybe next year if the vote is not ratfked.
Busy morning but now I am sitting and taking a break.
See all y’all tomorrow!
Thursday Meese. Normal spring weather here in the Hudson Valley today.
Good morning. Did my walk, even in the rain. Okay, it was just barely raining. Yay for rain, and for walking.
It’s 64 heading for 74, lightly overcast likely to get heavier as we’ve got rain in the forecast for this afternoon. Yesterday we generated 5.64 KWHs which at least is, barely, what I use in a day when the HVAC system isn’t on. The m-t-d at 296.61 lost more ground.
Feeling really groggy this morning. Can’t think why. I didn’t wake up any more often than usual, didn’t stay awake each time any longer than usual, and got about 7 hours of sleep total. But every thought is fighting its way through molasses to form. Oh well. Need to take Cloud to the vet for his monthly OA injection. So need to be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
Good Thursday morning, Meese! Gray, cold, gloomy at noon in Ashburn. Yesterday it was 95 F. before the front moved through: now it’s 59 F. I can’t seem to wake up today.
Going to skip the concert this afternoon in order to continue my work and await Nora’s arrival for dinner. We’ve had a nice amount of rain so the dry brown grass is already looking better. It’s cold, though!
Wishing a good day to all at the Pond,
Good morning, 50 and sunny in Bellingham today. I finally took my grouchy self out doors yesterday and puttering around watering plants was therapeutic. I miss the drama for full flowering pots but the relief of not having to care for them is real too. I’ll plant a few summer flowers but for now I need to stick to the keep it simple plan.
Sue (my housekeeper) has been away for a few weeks so we’ll be busy with housework when she arrives this afternoon. I can keep things going with assistance so I’m grateful she is back Best wishes to all.
I have a question for you as our resident plant and tree expert. I have a bottle brush tree in my back yard that has started having the tips of some leaves turning orange. The tree is about 10 ft tall and has nice branches and had nice blossoms this spring. I looked up “what can cause a bottle brush tree to have leaves turn orange” and it said over or under watering – which is not helpful! We had a problem with the watering system and either of those things could have happened.
My question is this: if I experiment by not watering as much (the most likely thing), will the tree recover or will I need to do something proactively to fix what ails it? For example, if it is root rot fungi can just letting it dry out help? Any advice would be appreciated.
So obviously I am not asking you specifically about the bottle brush tree as you likely do not have them in the Pacific Northwest but trees in general and correcting an issue with an adjustment versus needed a tree doctor.
Here is the tree from back at the beginning of April:

There was a water issue that resulted in over watering which is one of the “causes” listed for the yellowing leaves. I got it under control around the 15th but the post-issue watering schedule might not have been great; I did some research and discovered it was best to water in the early morning before the blazing hot sun evaporated everything. So I made two adjustments, fixed the over watering and changing the watering schedule. That was all within about a 4-5 week period of time. Do you think just the water adjustment schedule will get the tree back to being healthy?
Lovely tree Jan, hope it recovers. Adjusting the amount and timing of watering should help, but if you suspect fungal issues I would treat that too. The photina tree growing by our garage needed care….more water, fungal sprays and deep root feeding to recover so it was a watch and wait care plan and thankfully it is healthy again.
I’ve got a yew tree growing in a large pot that unfortunately won’t recover from it’s roots being to wet last winter so we’ve got to get it out of the pot and redo the planting. It screens the utility connections and I can’t plant in the ground so I I need to find another tree that will grow in a pot.
Thank you for that advice! I will wait and watch how the tree responds to the new watering schedule. The tree is actually the landlord’s but I have been tasked with keeping all the plants watered so if it seems to get worse, I will have them contact the landscaping firm and see what they say. I met the landscaper and he is the one who set the watering schedule and the irrigation leads after the water event so it is possible that this is a normal cycle for the tree. It is beautiful! The blooms are mostly gone now but they were spectacular when they were in full bloom like in the photo. It is home to a nesting white wing dove right now.
Good afternoon, meeses! Thursday …
It is 82 degrees and sunny. A refreshingly cool 62 when I got up. I am enjoying it while I can – soon mornings will be 85. I got a nice walk in.
It feels like the holiday weekend has already started. Clients are not answering emails, things seem to be in slow motion.
Ignoring the news today. I have one errand to run then I will sit and veg out.
See all y’all tomorrow!
Friday Meese. Cool and breezy here in Kingston
Sun Ra’s birthday today
and Langston Hughes joined the ancestors. on May 22, 1967
Oh, Sis, thanks for including this little bio of Langston Hughes, one of my favorite American poets! Wouldn’t it have been cool to live during the time of the Harlem Renaissance and hear all the jazz, poetry, and singers? To me that is one of the most “American” of artistic periods, even though I’m sure that few received the credit they deserved.
Good morning. Had a terrible night’s sleep. But I did my walk and I’m here. With any luck, people will think we’re closed today.
Sympathies, another. You, bfitz, and I seem to have a lock on the “Worst Sleeper at the Pond” award.
Good morning, meeses! Friday of a long weekend …
It is 64 degrees in Tucson 🌵 with an expected daytime high of 88. Sunny skies are in the forecast. I saw the waxing crescent in the WNW sky last night and there were three planets with her. I had heard that Venus and Jupiter would be visible in conjunction with her but I was surprised to see another planet (star?) off to the left. I have not figure out what it is yet but the moon and her planet sisters lined up were a delightful sight.
I couldn’t get in touch with everyone I needed to in order to have a complete to-do list for the long weekend but I have enough to keep me busy. I am hoping to make June a quiet month and take more time off and getting a bunch of things done this weekend will make that more likely.
See all y’all later!
I haven’t seen the moon in over a week and from the forecast I seriously doubt I’ll see Her for another week. Lovely that you got to. (A quiet June sounds like a very good idea. Hope you can pull that off.)
It’s 64 heading for 74, overcast, and supposed to start raining any minute now. At which point I’ll close the west window. Yesterday we generated 10.66 KWHs and the m-t-d at 307.27 lost more ground. But at least it’s over 300.
Another groggy day. Don’t know if it’s the humidity, the barometric pressure, or both but my hands are stiff and achy. Totally not helpful. Later today I’ll do more stuff to get ready for basket’s visit but right now I’d best be about my boosting day. Holding the Good/Healing/Protecting Thought for everybody. {{{Meeses}}}
Good Friday morning, Moosekind! it’s cold and gray outside, more like a morning in February than May. We’ve had 3/4 of an inch of rain so far, with more on the way. This is good, but I wish it would be nice on Sunday for that little supper excursion to hear music and go dancing. I’ve bought a new dress and all that. Right now in Ashburn it’s 56 F.
Calloo, Callay, 0 Frabjous Day! Thank Goddess for Granddaughter! She came over for dinner last night and after finishing the Lego flowers, she sat down and got my ETA for the UK in order. Wow! She uploaded a pic of my passport, as well as one of my ancient visage, then went to my Mileage Plus account and fixed it so my trip to Columbus, OH, shows up on my phone. She also put my Yahoo email on my phone. I paid her a consulting fee, although she said it was not at all necessary. I maintain that Girls Always Need Money, especially as she’s about to go to Florida for another look at U. Florida. She wants to go to college in a warm climate.
Bfitz, how long will basket stay with you? He’s such a dear. Please give him my love if you think of it. Are you cooking a special dinner for him?
I have heaps of work to finish. Like bfitz and anotherdemocrat, I sleep badly and consequently feel groggy from lack of sleep in the morning. I need to drink my second cup of covfefe and get to work. Wishing a good day to all at the Pond!
He’ll be getting here tomorrow late afternoon and staying through Wednesday morning. Then he’s driving to Sedalia for the Scott Joplin Festival. He’s planning to come back to Fayetteville next Sunday from Sedalia for a few more hours together before leaving for KCI on Monday June 1st. And bless him, he’ll be doing all my computer techie stuff while he’s here.
Good afternoon, 55 and sunny in Bellingham today. I’ve had to lay low this morning so I hope I can hobble around this afternoon. I want to plant a new fern and move some hellebores growing in pots to a spot in the ground. They are really nice plants and look nice in the pots but will not stay healthy growing there. Best wishes to all.
Comment from Dee posted in last week’s welcomings but for today:
Good luck, Dee!!
Thank you

Good morning. Getting ready for kickboxing. Going to stretch out the usual chores over the long weekend, but if I don’t get in the exercise early, it somehow never happens.
